Cars are a vital mode of transportation for many people around the world, whether it’s for running errands, getting to work, or visiting family. But not all countries produce cars at the same rate.
The biggest manufacturers come from all over the globe, including Germany’s Volkswagen Group, Japan’s Toyota Motor Corporation, and India’s TATA and Mahindra companies.
1. China
In 2019 alone, car companies around the world produced over 92 million motor vehicles. Some produce cars under their own brands while others assemble cars made by companies from overseas.
China’s major domestic manufacturers include SAIC Motor, Dongfeng, FAW and Changan. In addition to traditional passenger cars, China is also pushing hard into new energy vehicles. (NEV) production as part of its Made in China 2025 program.
2. Japan
As a country, Japan produces a large number of cars that carry the imprints of companies like Honda and Toyota. Their motor vehicle designs have become popular worldwide.
Their car production is complemented by the presence of global brands like Renault, GM, and Ford. Brazil is another top automotive producer, thanks to a rebounding economy. Similarly, South Korea is responsible for brands like Hyundai.
3. Germany
Germany is world-famous for its high-quality vehicles and its research. Its car brands like BMW and Mercedes Benz are popular worldwide.
Its best production year was back in 2013, with 3,712,380 motor vehicles produced. South America is represented by Brazil, which isn’t known for its domestic cars but attracts a variety of foreign brands. Its top cars are small passenger cars and SUVs.
4. India
India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. And with it comes a massive demand for cars.
Its top domestic car manufacturers include Tatra and Skoda Auto, but it also manufactures well-known international brands such as Hyundai.
It’s not known for its own automotive brands, but Mexico’s best production year was back in 2013. The country’s home to a number of foreign car companies.
5. South Africa
The country produces many cars and is home to brands like BMW, Porsche, and Mercedes-Benz. It also has beautiful national parks and game reserves, including the Kruger.
USAID programs help South Africa support small- and medium-sized businesses, improve education, reduce gender-based violence, and fight HIV/AIDS. The government recently held the most competitive local elections in its history and is navigating new era of coalition politics especially in metro areas.
6. Poland
From bustling cities to untamed wilderness, Poland is a country of contrasts. The nation is home to Nobel Prize winners like Maria Sklodowska-Curie and Frederic Chopin.
Poland’s rich biodiversity can be enjoyed in the vast primeval forest of Bialowieza. You can also explore the country’s bird sanctuaries to see hundreds of different species. The Polish music scene is also diverse, from classical composers to death metal bands.
7. Argentina
With cars, we can get from point A to point B whether it be running errands, going to work or school, or traveling. Regardless of the reason, these automobiles are a huge necessity to many people.
France produces cars like Renault, Peugeot, and Citroen that provide diversity, quality (and a touch of romance). Czech Republic’s Skoda also has a worldwide reputation.
8. Mexico
The Mexican automotive industry is home to a wide range of international car brands. The country was first introduced to Volkswagen in 1954 with the introduction of the VW Sedan (known as the Fusca in Brazil).
It’s also the home to many local brands like Mexico City-based Mastretta Cars, which is known for its high-performance MXT sports car. The company recently partnered with Lotus to build the next generation of its sporty model.
9. Thailand
Referred to as the Detroit of Asia, Thailand is a major hub for companies like GM and Toyota. It’s also home to a number of popular local brands.
During his resounding seven-decade reign, King Bhumibol Adulyadej built the world’s fourth largest economy and brought stability to South East Asia. But his tacit support of military coups over the last decade has cast doubt on that legacy.
10. France
For many people, cars are a necessary tool for running errands, commuting to work, or visiting friends and family. It is no wonder then that these vehicles are so popular worldwide.
French car maker Peugeot has seen its cars drive from Iran to New York, while battered 404s still ply the streets of southern Nigeria. Other countries that produce a lot of motor vehicles include Thailand, Russia, Turkey, and even Slovakia.
